Toonie, Twoonie, Twoney?

You got your penny, your nickel, your dime, quarter and loonie.  But why isn’t the two dollar coin spelled with a “two” at the beginning?  I’ve been spelling it toonie.  Have I been wrong all this time?
Don’t think so.

CBC and The Globe and Mail call it a Toonie.
They are two great authourities on spelling.
I think it is meant to follow the spelling of Loonie.

Yeah, it’s toonie. Comes up on spellcheck though, which is annoying.

Maybe should could start a national campaign to call it the “Bearie” or perhaps the “Polarie”? or would that confuse too many snowmobile owners?
